ABOUT US

ON THE DIRT was created as a YouTube channel back in the first year that YouTube came into being, 2007. In those days, it was the personal YouTube account of John McCredie with a few little videos of some 4WD trips he had done with family and friends. John had always had a passion for gravel rallying and even won the Australian Rally Championship for pocket rockets in the front wheel drive 0-1300cc category. From there, this passion extended to four-wheel-driving and in 2009 John and his two sons Nathan and Jacob filmed their first 4WD Winch Comp.

The YouTube Channel soon started to grow in both popularity and size (number of videos) and was changed from the name OHM26 to ON THE DIRT. With more videos being produced and more 4wd and rally content being uploaded, the channel now has over 14,000 subscribers and almost 5 million views.

2020 Mitsubishi Triton GLS Premium Review

By Jon Thomson One of the true surprises in the Australian vehicle market in recent times has been Mitsubishi, not least of which for vehicles like the 2020 Mitsubishi Triton GLS Premium. It’s a brand that has been punching well above its weight. They’ve been selling more vehicles than any one could imagine, from a line up of products, that in all fairness has no stand outs, is generally older and less glitzy than its opponents, but which [...]

FJ55 Land Cruiser – The Ugly One

Loved and Hated. The FJ55 Land Cruiser was a 4WD that divided 4WD enthusiasts. It looks and styling was loved by some, hated by others! Toyota's 4WD production started way back in 1941 when the Japanese Army took a Jeep, that they had acquired during the occupation of the Philippines, and sent it back home and ordered Toyota to make something similar. Then in the 1950's, the US Army commissioned Toyota to make 100 vehicles similar [...]

Taylor Gill Battles the Rally of Gods to Take Second in Junior WRC

They don’t call it the Rally of Gods for nothing. The EKO Acropolis Rally is one of the most brutal tests in the World Rally Championship, and in 2025 it proved once again why it has earned its legendary status. With scorching heat, tyre-shredding rocks, and mountainous stages north of Athens, it pushed competitors to the edge. But for Aussie rising star Taylor Gill, it was a rally that tested his patience, precision, and perseverance, and he walked away [...]

Putting the new Kumho MT-71 to the test

For those who follow our YouTube channel or regularly read our articles, we recently reviewed the Kumho AT51 all terrain tyre that we’ve been running on the OTD Pajero for some time. We really like the AT51, so when Kumho released a new Mud Tyre, we asked them if we could have a set to test them out and they were generous enough to provide a brand new set of their MT-71’s for us to [...]

Photos: Roy Meuronen Photography James O’Malley and co-driver Jono Forrest delivered an impressive performance at the Shamrock Haulage Rally of Bathurst, claiming two-wheel-drive honours while finishing sixth outright in the NSW Rally Championship field and ninth outright in the overall event. Competing in their Toyota 86 against a strong field that included some of Australia’s top rally crews and a fleet of high-powered four-wheel-drive machinery, O’Malley and Forrest produced a consistent drive across the fast [...]

NSW Rally Championship – A Shortened Season, A Big Battle Ahead

By John McCredie The 2025 Shamrock Haulage NSW Rally Championship has taken some unexpected twists, and as we head into the final two rounds, the fight for the title looks more intriguing than ever. With the Lazer Rally of the Bay cancelled due to wet weather, the championship has effectively become a four-round sprint, and only two of those rallies are left to decide who will be crowned champion. Who will win the 2025 NSW [...]

The Oodnadatta Track South Australia

The Oodnadatta Track follows the route of the old Ghan Railway line and runs from the North of the Flinders Ranges starting in the town of Maree through to the small town of Marla on the Stuart Highway in South Australia. Typically most tourists travel from the south eastern states through to the Northern Territory on the bitumen roads, but the alternative is to use this gravel track and skirt around the bottom of Lake [...]
