From July 1, 2025, it’s going to be easier, and more affordable than ever to get behind the wheel in Australian rally and off road events.

Motorsport Australia has unveiled a fresh set of licence options aimed squarely at growing participation at the grassroots and state level. Whether you’re chasing a club-level podium or giving rallying a go for the very first time, the new licence structure provides flexible, low-cost pathways into the sport we all love.

Under the revamped system, competitors can now access a dedicated Rally Licence for $170, or a Single Event Rally Licence for just $85. These licences will allow participation in club and state-level events, with the option to upgrade for interstate or national competition if desired. It’s a simple, streamlined approach that opens the door for more people to take part without the pressure of long-term commitments or higher upfront costs.

For the off road crowd, there’s equally good news. A Club Off Road Licence and Single Event Off Road Licence are now available at the same price points ($170 and $85 respectively) making it easier for newcomers to get a taste of the action and for clubs to attract fresh blood into the sport.

According to Motorsport Australia’s General Manager of Customer & Development, Michael Melilli, the new structure was the result of detailed consultation with the rally and off road community.

“These updates are the result of extensive consultation with the rally and off road community, ensuring the changes truly meet the needs of those who live and breathe the sport,” Melilli said. “Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just starting out, the new licence options are designed to reduce barriers to participation while still upholding the highest standards of safe, fair and fun competition.”

The new structure is part of a broader push to strengthen grassroots motorsport, with Motorsport Australia reaffirming its commitment to supporting local clubs, easing entry costs, and creating clearer, more accessible pathways for competitors across the country.

For long-time competitors, the changes will offer welcome cost savings and flexibility. For those just stepping into the driver’s seat, they represent an exciting new gateway into rally and off road. These sports are often seen as out of reach due to licensing and vehicle requirements.

“This is a big step forward,” Melilli added, “and the start of an exciting new chapter for the rally and off road community.”

With these changes coming into effect on Tuesday 1 July 2025, now is the perfect time to dust off that project car, grab your co-driver, and start planning your next adventure ON THE DIRT!
